ALBUM REVIEW: Little Simz – Grey Area

Even as a massive fan of the hip-hop genre, Little Simz fell completely under my radar. This British female rapper, unbeknownst to me, was making a name for herself as a new, fresh face in the realm of conscious hip-hop. Her newest release, Grey Area, caught my attention, and it has quickly become my favorite album of 2019 so far.

This record has an incredibly tight tracklist of 10 songs, and each one leaves a mark in an entirely different way. Little Simz is an incredibly engaging rapper. Her flows are varied and silky smooth, coupled with some tremendous lyrical ability and introspective anecdotes present. The instrumentals on this album are gorgeous throughout, and the influences are eclectic, ranging from jazz to pop. Likewise, she casted a number of interesting features on this project, one of the most notable being the European electronic group Little Dragon. Each of these guest appearances fit snuggly into the record, and none of them steal the spotlight from Simz, and for good reason. This record was her time to shine.

At a brisk 35 minutes, this album is worth anybody’s listen, regardless if you’re a fan of the genre or not. Give this woman a shot; I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
